Competing on home soil, Qian Tianyi won the Junior Girls’ Singles title at the 2016 China Junior and Cadet Open in Taicang on Tuesday 26th July and thus completed a quite remarkable run of success both in recent weeks and at the now well established ITTF World Junior Circuit tournament.
On the concluding day of play, in an event that witnessed all for semi-finalists in the Junior Girls’ Singles event being from China, Qian Tianyi staved off strong opposition from her compatriots to secure the top prize.
At the semi-final stage she beat Liu Weishan (11-5, 11-6, 11-7, 4-11, 11-13, 11-3), before securing the title at the final expense of Sun Yingsha (11-6, 11-7, 7-11, 7-11, 11-13, 11-7, 11-7). In the counterpart semi-final, Sun Yingsha had overcome Sun Mingyang in five games (10-12, 14-12, 11-5, 11-3, 11-4).
Success meant that the 16 year old had completed a successful defence of her Junior Girls’ Singles title; in 2015 she had beaten Wang Yidi in the final.
Furthermore, it was no less than the third occasion that she had reached the final of the Junior Girls’ Singles event in Taicang; in 2013 she was beaten by colleague Zhang Rui in the title deciding contest, having earlier in the day accounted for Sun Yizhen, also from China, to win the Cadet Girls’ Singles title.
Meanwhile in the past three weeks, the performances of Qian Tianyi have gone from strength to strength.
At the 2016 ITTF World Tour Pyongyang Open, which concluded in the first week of July, she was beaten in the group stage of the Women’s Singles event by colleague Gu Yuhan and DPR Korea’s Kim Nam Hae, before overcoming Choe Hyon Hwa, also from DPR Korea to reserve her place in the main draw.
However, there was to be a first round departure; she was beaten by the host nation’s Ri Myong Sun, the top seed.
The defeat at the hands of Ri Myong Sun was witnessed on Friday 1st July; since that date Qian Tianyi has remained unbeaten.
Impressively at the Nikon 2016 Hong Kong Junior and Cadet Open, she won the Junior Girls’ Team title in partnership with Mu Jingyu and Sun Yingsha and the Junior Girls’ Doubles with Sun Yingsha, before beating the host association’s Minnie Soo Wai Yam to claim the Junior Girls’ Singles title.
Again Clean Sweep
Success in every event for which she was available, it was the same in Taciang.
Alongside Sun Mingyang and Sun Yingsha she won the Junior Girls’ Team event; before adding a fifth consecutive title by being crowned Junior Girls’ Singles champion.
More Chinese Gold
Gold for the host nation in the Junior Girls’ Singles event, it was the same in the Cadet Girls’ Singles competition.
Shi Yunyao clinched the top prize beating Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Jie at the semi-final stage (11-5, 11-5, 11-5), prior to securing the title at the final expense of compatriot Gao Yuhui (11-6, 11-5, 12-10).
In the opposite half of the draw in an all Chinese affair Gao Yuhui overcame Xu Jarui at the semi-final stage (11-7, 11-2, 11-9).
Title for Hong Kong
