Winner at the recent South East Asia Junior and Cadet Championships in Phnom Penh, Thailand’s Pattaratorn Passara maintained his good form to secure the Junior Boys’ Singles title at the 2016 Jordan Junior and Cadet Open in Amman on Tuesday 26th July.

Occupying the no.4 seeded place in the competition, at the final hurdle he accounted for colleague, Yanapong Panagitgun, the no.2 seed, to reserve the top step of the medal podium (9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10).

Upset Seeding
Good form in the final but it was at the semi-final stage that he had excelled.

Having recorded a last eight win in opposition to Iraq’s Hussein Jabber, the no.15 seed (11-5, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7), he overcame Chinese Taipei’s Lai Chi-Chien, the top seed (11-6, 1-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-4, 11-9) to reserve his place in the final. Notably one round earlier, Lai Chi-Chien had ended the progress of Jordan’s bright hope, Khaled Khader, the no.10 seed (11-3, 14-12, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7).

Yanapong Panagitgun
Meanwhile, in the opposite half of the draw on the second day of play; Yanapong Panagitgun had overcome Sweden’s Filip Karlsson, the no.8 seed (11-8, 12-14, 6-11, 6-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-2), before ending the hopes of Qatar’s Mohammed Abdulwahhab, the no.3 seed and defending champion (13-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-6) to reserve his place in the title deciding contest.

First Title
Success for Pattaratorn Passara meant that he claimed the first ever ITTF World Junior Circuit Boys’ Singles title of his career, on what was his fourth appearance of the year.

Earlier in February he had reached the semi-final round in Qatar, losing to the champion elect, Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic, before in May progressing to the quarter-finals on home soil by Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chun-Hsiang had ended progress.

Alas on his most recent appearance, he was beaten in the first round in Hong Kong by China’s Yuan Licen.

Silver Medal
Gold in the Junior Boys’ Singles event but in the Junior Boys’ Doubles competition, partnering Yanapong Panagitgun, the duo had to settle for the silver medal.

The top seeds, after recording a semi-final success against the combination of Jordan’s Khaled Khader and Omar Swaify, the no.5 seeds (11-7, 4-11, 11-1, 11-7), they were beaten in the final by Chinese Taipei’s Cai Ruei-Fong and Lai Chi-Chien, the no.2 seeds, in a tense full distance encounter, determined by the narrowest of margins in the deciding game (12-10, 11-7, 5-11, 6-11, 11-9).

In the adjacent half of the draw, at the semi-final stage Cai Ruei-Fong and Lai Chi-Chien had accounted for Egypt’s Marwan Abdelwahab and Ahmed Elborhamy, the no.3 seeds (11-3, 11-4, 11-5).

Team Events
Play in the Junior Boys’ Singles and Junior Boys’ Doubles events concluded; attention now turns to the Junior Boys’ Team and Cadet Boys’ Team competitions.
